If you’re planning to study in China through a scholarship program, understanding the language of instruction is essential. The teaching language depends on the level and type of program you’re admitted into but in most cases, it will be Chinese (Mandarin).
For Undergraduate Students
All undergraduate programs in China are taught in Chinese.
Before beginning your major courses, scholarship recipients are required to attend one year of preparatory classes at designated universities. These classes focus on building your Mandarin proficiency and academic readiness.
Only after passing the official language and subject tests can you proceed to your degree program.
Note: Students who fail to meet the language requirement will automatically lose their scholarship eligibility.
For Graduate and Non-Degree Students
Most Master’s, PhD, and non-degree programs in China are also taught in Chinese. However, an increasing number of universities now offer English-taught programs in fields such as science, engineering, medicine, management, and economics.
If your chosen program is taught in Chinese and your Mandarin level isn’t yet sufficient, you’ll first complete a 1–2 year Chinese language training before starting your degree:
1 year for majors in science, engineering, agriculture, Western medicine, economics, management, law, and arts.
Up to 2 years for majors in literature, history, philosophy, and traditional Chinese medicine.
Once you achieve the required Chinese proficiency, you can officially begin your major studies.
Note: Failure to meet the language requirement within this period may result in scholarship termination.
For English-Taught Programs
Students admitted to English-taught programs or those who already have adequate Chinese proficiency are exempt from the Chinese language training requirement.
Summary
In short, the Chinese language is the foundation for most programs in China. It’s not just a means of study; it’s an opportunity to connect deeply with Chinese culture, society, and people. Whether you study in Chinese or English, learning the language will open countless doors during your stay.
